This course will introduce advanced students of karnatak vocal music to raga alapana and svara kalpana, the most important forms of melodic improvisation. Students will begin by learning precomposed examples of these forms. As they become comfortable with idiom, they will progress to designing their own improvisations. |

Additional Requirements and/or Comments: : Contact the instructor if interested in this class. Class time is TBA and will be determined between the instructor and the students once the students agree on a class time. In addition to the class time, students are required to meet individually with Professor Balasubrahmaniyan 1 hour each week for a more specialized tutorial session.
Prerequisites: MUSC 431 and MUSC 432 Attendance is mandatory. Students will be trained to perform concert repertoire and spontaneous creativity in South Indian raga phrases and solfege. Rigorous practice is expected to achieve higher competency. Students who have achieved some level in Karnatic music will be exempted from prerequisites. Undergraduates may take this course up to two times for a letter grade and up to four times for credit towards graduation. |
