This workshop is for students who already have a basic understanding of how to write literary fiction, either by having taken an introductory course (e.g., ENGL296 Techniques of Fiction) or by other means. |

Major Readings: Wesleyan RJ Julia Bookstore
Students will provide copies of their own stories to their classmates. They will also read a variety of published short stories and other texts, including pieces on writing.

Examinations and Assignments:
Some exercises if needed, three short stories, including one revision, weekly responses; final portfolio. |
Additional Requirements and/or Comments:
There is a strict attendance policy that will weigh heavily upon the course grade.Students are also required to attend 3 events per semester with visiting writers (these are scheduled on Wednesday afternoons and evenings; Q & A sessions at 4:15 and readings at 8:00 p.m.). Enrolled students must adjust their schedules accordingly.
To apply to this course, please submit 5 double-spaced pages of prose (preferably fiction). Please also submit a cover page in two sections: 1) your name, email address, year in school, major (if any), some of your favorite writers and any other influences; 2) a short biographical statement (a paragraph) describing your history with and interest in nonfiction writing, or other creative writing background. The application deadline is April 2, 2010 at 5 p.m. Students who have missed this deadline and would still like to apply to the workshop may contact the instructor to inquire if there are openings. Please submit your materials electronically in a single attachment to damartin@wesleyan.edu. Please use either Microsoft word or rich-text-format for your attachment. You will be notified electronically if you have been admitted (or not) to the course. Students may not take this course and another creative writing workshop concurrently. |
