This is a short-story workshop for students who already have a basic understanding of how to write narrative fiction, either by having taken an intro course (e.g., ENGL160, Techniques of Fiction) or by other means. |

Major Readings: Wesleyan RJ Julia Bookstore
Students must provide copies of their own stories to their classmates at least a week in advance of the discussion of them. There will be a steady diet of published short stories by a variety of authors as well.

Examinations and Assignments: Four short stories and a major revision of one of them, amounting to somewhere between 35 and 40 pages; regular short exercises and journal assignments; portfolio of all written work at the end of the semester. |
Additional Requirements and/or Comments: No later than Friday, November 10, 2006, applicants to this course must drop off with the English department administrator a five-page, double-spaced sample of their fiction as well as a cover page with their name, year, major, and a brief summary of previous writing experience: this will constitute an application to the course. Instructor will notify all applicants by email in time for registration. Students may not take this course and another writing course concurrently, with the exception of a senior thesis tutorial. Students who might wish to write an honors thesis in English are advised to take this course for a letter grade. The prerequisite to writing an honors thesis is an A- average for all English classes and the prerequisite for a creative honors thesis, additionally, is an A in two writing courses. |
