This is a short-story workshop for students who already have a basic understanding of how to write narrative fiction, either by having taken an intro course (e.g., ENGL160) or by other means. |
Essential Capabilities:
Writing Students will receive regular, detailed feedback on their written work from the professor and each other. Revision emphasized.

Major Readings: Wesleyan RJ Julia Bookstore
Students must provide copies of their own stories to their classmates at least a week in advance of the discussion of them. There will be a steady diet of published short stories by a variety of authors as well.

Examinations and Assignments: Four short stories and one revision; in-class writing exercises; portfolio of all written work at the end of the semester. |
Additional Requirements and/or Comments: No later than December 5, 2008 at 4 p.m., please bring a five-page, double-spaced sample of your prose fiction to the English Department office, 204 Downey, and include a cover sheet with your name, email address, major (if applicable), and a very brief summary of previous writing experience; this will be your application to the course. You may not take this course and another writing course concurrently, with the exception of a senior thesis tutorial. Students will add this course during drop/add. Please note: students who may be interested in writing a creative honors thesis are encouraged to take this course for a grade. To write an honors thesis a student must have an overall average of A- in English courses and, additionally, two A's in creative writing courses. |
