This workshop is for students who already have a basic understanding of how to write literary fiction, either by having taken an introductory course (e.g., ENGL296 Techniques of Fiction) or by other means. |

Students will provide copies of their own stories to their classmates. They will also read a variety of published short stories and other texts.

Examinations and Assignments:
Short exercises, two stories including one revision, extensive weekly critiques of other students' work, two short response papers; final portfolio. |
Additional Requirements and/or Comments:
Attendance at and participation in every class are required. Students must also make every effort to attend 3 events per semester with visiting writers (Q & A sessions at 4:15 on Wednesday afternoons; readings at 8:00 p.m.).
Application Deadline: Monday, April 8, by 4:00 PM
Application Process: (1) Go to the Creative Writing page of the English Department website at: http://www.wesleyan.edu/english/Writing%20.html and complete the online application. (2)Upload the following to the appropriate course link: 5 double-spaced pages of prose (preferably fiction) with a cover page in two sections: (a) your name, email address, year in school, major (if any), some of your favorite writers and any other influences; (b) a short biographical statement (a paragraph) describing your history with and interest in fiction writing, or other creative writing background. Please use either Microsoft Word or rich text format for your attachment, with the file name: "Last Name-First Initial-Course Number" (e.g. Smith-J-ENGL339.docx). You will be notified electronically of the status of your application during preregistration.
It is recommended that students not take more than two English creative writing courses concurrently.
This course contributes to the Theory & Literary Forms and Creative Writing concentrations of the English major. |
