Major Readings: Wesleyan RJ Julia Bookstore
Students will provide copies of their own stories to their classmates. They will also read craft essays and stories by writers including Nam Le, Margot Livesey, Matthew Salesses, Yoko Ogawa, Mariana Enriquez, Edward P. Jones

Examinations and Assignments:
Two short stories including one revision; extensive weekly written critiques of other students' work; short writing exercises and final portfolio of all written work. |
Additional Requirements and/or Comments:
This course will be taught by Professor Rachel Heng. Attendance at and participation in every class are required. Students must also make every effort to attend 3 events per semester with visiting writers (Q & A sessions at 4:30 on Wednesday afternoons; readings at 6:00 p.m.). Application Deadline: The Monday following the beginning of pre-registration by 11:59 PM.
Application Process: (1) Go to the Creative Writing page of the English Department website at: http://www.wesleyan.edu/english/Writing%20.html and complete the online application. (2)Upload the following to the appropriate course link: 5 double-spaced pages of prose (preferably fiction) with a cover page in two sections: (a) your name, email address, year in school, major (if any), some of your favorite writers and any other influences; (b) a short biographical statement (a paragraph) describing your history with and interest in fiction writing, or other creative writing background. Should you be applying to more than one Creative Writing course (Techniques, Intermediate, Advanced, Special Topics, or other), you must rank them on your cover page. Please use either Microsoft Word or rich text format for your attachment, with the file name: "Last Name-First Initial-Course Number" (e.g. Smith-J-ENGL339.docx). You will be notified electronically of the status of your application during preregistration.
It is highly recommended that students be enrolled in only one Creative Writing course in a semester. If you are admitted to more than one Creative Writing course, we request you choose one and let the instructors know during Adjustment Period. Please be serious about your choice for the consideration of instructors and other students.
Classes of '21 & '22: This course contributes to the Theory & Literary Forms and Creative Writing concentrations of the English major. Class of '23 and beyond: This course fulfills the Creative Writing requirement and contributes to the Creative Writing path of the English major.
Fall 2020: Student Option grading mode is available. However a grade of B+ or higher is required for students planning to pursue the Creative Writing concentration or path in the English major. |
