This workshop is for students who already have a basic understanding of how to write literary fiction, either by having taken an introductory course (e.g., ENGL296 Techniques of Fiction) or by other means. |

Attendance at and participation in every class are required. Students must also make every effort to attend 3 events per semester with visiting writers (Q & A sessions at 4:30 on Wednesday afternoons; readings at 6:00 p.m.). The course prerequisites are ENGL 296 or 342. Please submit a prerequisite override request describing your qualifications if you feel you qualify for the course but have not taken the prerequisites. The English department highly recommends that students be enrolled in only one Creative Writing course in a semester. If you are admitted to more than one Creative Writing course, we request you choose one and let the instructors know during Adjustment Period. By doing so you will be considerate of instructors and other students. This course contributes to fulfillment of ENGL major requirements: Creative Writing requirement, CW 300-level course, CW upper-level CW workshop, elective. |

Major Readings: Wesleyan RJ Julia Bookstore
Students will provide copies of their own stories to their classmates. They will also read craft essays and stories by writers including Nam Le, Margot Livesey, Matthew Salesses, Yoko Ogawa, Mariana Enriquez, Edward P. Jones |
Examinations and Assignments: Two short stories including one revision; extensive weekly written critiques of other students' work; short writing exercises and final portfolio of all written work.
