Intermediate Fiction Workshop
ENGL 339
Fall 2025
Section: 01
This course may be repeated for credit.

This course may be repeated for credit. This workshop is for students who already have a basic understanding of how to write literary fiction, either by having taken an introductory course (e.g., ENGL296 Techniques of Fiction) or by other means. In this intermediate poetry class, we will focus on two fundamental aspects of the poem: the sentence and the line. Like partners in a dance, the sentence and the line synchronize in manners from the simple to complex, without loss of clarity while (perhaps) maximizing expression. We begin the class by studying syntax, that is, the structure of a sentence, with the prose of Virginia Woolf, Toni Morrison, and Hanna Pylväinen. Then we will move on to the study of the line, examining a range of poets, with the types of sentences and line lengths they favor.
