The atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945 are central to the history of the 20th century. This course examines the scientific, cultural, and political origins of the bombs, their use in the context of aerial bombings and related issues in military history, the decision to use them, the human cost to those on whom it was dropped, and their place in history, culture, and identity politics to the present. Sources will include works on the history of science, military, political, and cultural history, and literary and other artistic interpretations. |
