The main topics of this course are theories of leftist culture in Russia in the 1910-20s; futuristic events created by Vladimir Mayakovsky, David Burliuk, Mikhail Larionov, and others; poetry by Kruchonykh, Khlebnikov, Mayakovsky, and others; The Association of Real Art (OBERIU); ideas of "transreason" (ZAUM') or "transrational language" (ZAUMNYI IAZYK); futurist literary and artistic groups; avant-garde philosophy in the visual arts; suprematism and rayonism in painting (Malevich, Shkolnik, Filonov); futurist theater (VICTORY OVER THE SUN; VLADIMIR MAYAKOVSKY: A TRAGEDY); futurists after the socialist revolution; "Proletcult" group: theories of Bogdanov and Kerzhentsev; the theater of Vsevolod Meyerhold; theater constructivism and biomechanics; the theater of Igor Terentyev; the "Left Front of the Arts" and its journals; the formalist school of literature and arts studies; Trotsky as a theorist of futurism; the struggle of the Bolsheviks against the avant-garde and futurism. |
