In this course we study ancient Greek funerary and wedding ritual and the equivalence between them that is developed in literature and art: in literature, the parallel is especially marked in Greek tragedy; in art, it is notable that the same kinds of ritual vases were used in both death and marriage rituals. Our course will explore these thematic links in ancient Greek culture from the 8th through the 4th centuries BCE. |
