This course offers a survey of one of the most popular and challenging literary genres of the High and late Middle Ages: the romance. In addition to a close study of the texts themselves, the class will consider questions of genre and categorization, the tradition of chivalry and the stereotypes of courtly love, as well as issues of oral performance in medieval court culture. We will read romances written throughout Europe and England in the Middle Ages. By the end of the class, you will begin to understand the complexities of the medieval romance genre, the diversity of its characteristics, and its place in medieval literary and social culture. |
