This course is designed to show how memory works, and it serves as a complement to PSYC/NS&B 221: Human Memory. PSYC 321 is conceptually linked to PSYC/NS&B 221 in terms of topics covered, but it is an independent course. Students may take either course alone or both courses (concurrently or sequentially). Whereas PSYC/NS&B 221 provides an in-depth overview of memory by examining psychology and neuroscience research, PSYC 321 covers memory through major films and documentaries. Topics include amnesia, person recognition, savant memory, altered memories in science fiction, autobiographical memory, false memory, troubled memory, and memory changes in old age. Two films per week will be used to illustrate aspects of memory. PSYC 321 is not a course about film; it is a course about memory that uses film to inform viewers about memory. |

Writing
Students will write short essays relating memory and film every two weeks.

Examinations and Assignments:
Students will write multiple essays during the semester, and complete a final project relating memory and film. |
