Calculus and its Applications to Life Sciences
MATH 123
Fall 2006
| Section:
01
|
This course is aimed at emphasizing applications of calculus in the life sciences while undertaking a rigorous study of mathematics. Motivation for the study of calculus will be centered on examples linked to life sciences. The goal is to provide life science students with a deepened understanding of calculus and of its uses. The course will be team taught by a molecular biophysicist and a mathematician. |

Examinations and Assignments: There will be regular calculus homework assignments. In adition, there will be weekly sessions and biweekly assignments focused on specific applications of calculus in the life sciences, to topics such as enzyme kinetics, function of respiratory protiens, protein binding to DNA and its role in gene regulations, cell physiology, and drug action. There will be two tests and a final exam. |
Additional Requirements and/or Comments: The mathematics component of MATH123 is equivalent to MATH121, a course designed for students who have completed a high school calculus course and who might pursue study in an area for which calculus is an essential tool, but who are not prepared to "place out" of MATH117. The student in MATH123 will be expected to have an interest in the life sciences and to possess a basic knowledge of biology, as can be obtained from taking for having taken BIOL/MB&B181. Recommended preparation is high school mathematics through a semester of calculus. Students who have not studied calculus previously should enroll in MATH117. Students may get credit for only one of MATH117, MATH121, or MATH123 and are encouraged to seek departmental advice about which course to take. |
