Cuba's Afro-Creole Religions
LAST 323
Fall 2006
Section: 01
Crosslisting: AFAM 321, RELI 323

This course will examine the way in which tumultuous events in Cuban history (transatlantic slavery, the witchcraft scares of the Republican period, pre-revolutionary political instability) are re-imagined in the magical/spiritual imagery associated with the island's Afro-Creole religions. Specifically, we will explore how memory and history interact in the constitution of implicit knowledge and ritual practices belonging to Cuban Palo Monte, the Abakua secret society, Spiritism, and Ocha-Ifia (Santeria).
