This course is designed to introduce students to topics in the life sciences and the basics of documentary filmmaking, in order to teach students the skills and art of communicating science-related issues through visual media. This semester the course is designated a Service Learning Course, and will partner with various hospitals and home care agencies in Connecticut to produce short videos on topics related to the nursing profession that will be shown at the Nightingale Awards for Excellence Nursing in April, 2009. In preparation for this task, students will learn technical filmmaking skills (composition, lighting, editing) and will study science documentaries to understand functional models of non-fiction filmmaking. In complementary sessions, students will learn about specific diseases, at the molecular, cellular, and human level, to develop a knowledge base that enables intellectual engagement with the nursing profession. Students will work toward a final project - an eight-minute documentary on the nursing profession; for example, an engaging personal profile of a nurse, a story about issues that nurses face in caring for patients with particular ailments, a look at the evolution of the nursing profession (and its portrayal in the media) over the past century, etc. |
