The course, which combines movement study and an examination of the ways in which art can shape individual and collective consciousness, makes active use of the fact that the instructor is a working movement artist (as Eiko & Koma) who grew up in postwar Japan. We will read literature and see artwork and films that connect to the idea of nakedness, a core them of Eiko & Koma's work. This includes postwar Japanese literature, human experiences of the atomic bombing, and a retrospective catalogue of Eiko & Koma's work. What is it to be naked? What is it to forget and remember? How does being or becoming a mover or dancer affect our emotional rigor, seeing/learning, and creativity? What is it to be an artist and to be a public intellectual? These are some of the many questions we will explore. |
