This upper-level seminar explores how Americans and others have experienced, recalled, and written about war from the 17th century to Vietnam. The course opens with the Indian wars of colonial America and proceeds, chronologically, to the Seven Years War, the American Revolution, the War of 1812, the Mexican-American War, the Civl War, the First and Second World Wars, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. In addition to reading journals and memoirs, students will read such classics as William H. McNeill, THE PURSUIT OF POWER. Students also will study photographic evidence and view several films. |
Essential Capabilities:
Interpretation, Writing This course requires students to spend considerable time evaluating and interpreting primary sources: images, objects, documents. The course also requires students to write critically and imaginatively about primary as well as secondary sources--e.g., articles and books written by modern historians.
