This course introduces students to Japanese taiko drumming. The overarching goal of this class is to gain a broad understanding of Japanese culture by studying the theory, performance practices, and history of various genres of classical, folk, and contemporary music traditions. Students will gain a better understanding of the spirit behind the matsuri (festival) and other Japanese performance arts through learning two to three pieces on the Japanese taiko drum and basic techniques of playing the shinobue (bamboo flute). Students should wear clothes appropriate for demanding physical activity, i.e., stretching, squatting, various large arm movements. |

Examinations and Assignments: Students will also be assigned weekly readings and viewings that deal with these various Japanese performing arts and are expected to write a brief response paper for each assignment. Students are expected to show concerted effort in learning the pieces, attend all classes and one hour weekly TA sessions. There will be a student performance at the end of the semester. |
Additional Requirements and/or Comments: Auditions will take place at the first class. Attendance at one TA session per week is required. This semester, the choices are Thursdays at noon and fridays at 4pm. So, in addition to the class time, you need to be available one of those time slots. Also, the concert, which is the final, is on May 5th, in the evening, with a dress rehearsal In the afternoon |
