This course introduces students to Japanese taiko drumming. The overarching goal of this class is to gain a broad understanding of Japanese culture by studying the theory, performance practices, and history of various genres of classical, folk, and contemporary music traditions. Students will gain a better understanding of the spirit behind the matsuri (festival) and Japanese performance arts through learning basic taiko technique and one or two pieces on the Japanese taiko drum. Students should wear clothes appropriate for demanding physical activity (i.e., stretching, squatting, various large arm movements). |

Examinations and Assignments:
Students will be assigned weekly readings and viewings that deal with these various Japanese performing arts and are expected to write a brief response paper for each assignment. Students are expected to show concerted effort in learning the pieces, attend all classes and the one hour weekly TA sessions. There will be a student performance at the end of the semester. |
Additional Requirements and/or Comments:
Admitted students will be required to have a pair of bachi (sticks), which the instructor will have available for purchase for $25. (Not required for audition) Students are required to participate in one 1 hour TA session per week and are also required to, participate in the final concert. The schedule for these is TBD but will be known as of audition time. Auditions will be held during the first class in World Music Hall. |
