This course is part of the Social, Cultural, and Critical Theory Certificate Program. Students will be asked to analyze advanced theoretical readings each week and apply these readings to Japanese horror film and fiction. The course begins with the J-Horror phenomenon in the 1990s and goes through contemporary films marketed with the label of "Extreme Violence." The films will be analyzed together with postmodern/poststructuralist theory and theories of violence. We will discuss the limits and applications of these Western theories to Japanese culture and explore how the genre of Japanese Horror provides a site where these two discourses form a complex dialogue with one another. |

This course is listed under the Certificate of Social, Cultural, and Critical Theory, and there will be a moderate amount of theoretic readings each week. All interested students must notify the instructor. Selection will be by paper submission. Please send a short paper (5-7 pages) from one of your previous classes that you consider to be your best writing. The writing must be analytical in nature (preferably a film or literature analysis, but as long as it analyzes a text, it will be acceptable). Please send the paper during the pre-registration period. Students accepted will be notified by the instructor. |
