This advanced workshop offers students a chance to read biographies and write biographical prose. Among other questions we will ask, Where and how does such a portrait begin? What responsibilities does representing a life involve? What kinds of research are necessary? What constitutes evidence about a life? How does, and to what extent should, the writer's relationship to his or her subject inform the portrait? |

Examinations and Assignments:
Assignments include short exercises and long profiles, two revisions, and a portfolio of all written work at the end of the semester. |
Additional Requirements and/or Comments:
This course is a workshop: Attendance at and participation in every class are required. Students are also required to attend 3 readings by visiting writers (usually scheduled at 8 pm on Wednesday nights) during the semester. To apply to this course, please submit 5 double-spaced pages of prose (preferably creative nonfiction). Please also submit a cover page in two sections: 1) your name, email address, year in school, major (if any), some of your favorite writers and any other influences, and 2) a short biographical statement (a paragraph) describing your history with and interest in nonfiction writing. There will be two deadlines for submission of materials, one during fall pre-registration and the other on January 18, 2010. If you are applying for the course in January, please submit your materials electronically in a single attachment to lcohen01@wesleyan.edu no later than 10 a.m. on Monday, January 18, 2010. Please use either Microsoft word or rich-text-format for your attachment. You will be notified electronically if you have been admitted (or not) to the course. If you are applying to more than one writing workshop, please note your ranking of these courses within your application.
