This seminar-style course offers students with prior experience writing creative nonfiction a chance to develop new work and to discuss intensively a range of longer form 20th-century and contemporary nonfiction writing. Class meetings will focus on the analysis of this published work and on constructive critique of essays submitted by members of the workshop. |

Major Readings: Wesleyan RJ Julia Bookstore
Readings in contemporary nonfiction--potentially including work by Hilton Als, Joan Didion, Nick Flynn, Renee Gladman, W.G. Sebald--and of other students' essays.

Examinations and Assignments:
Several short essays; one long essay; two revisions; short presentations and response papers on the assigned readings; and a final portfolio of all written work. |
Additional Requirements and/or Comments:
Students are also required to attend 3 events per semester with visiting writers (these are scheduled on Wednesday afternoons and evenings; Q & A sessions at 4:15 and readings at 8:00 p.m.). Enrolled students must adjust their schedules accordingly.
To apply to this course, please submit 5 double-spaced pages of prose (preferably creative nonfiction). Please also submit a cover page in two sections: 1) your name, email address, year in school, major (if any), some of your favorite writers and any other influences; 2) a short biographical statement (a paragraph) describing your history with and interest in nonfiction writing, or other creative writing background. The application deadline is April 2, 2010 at 5 p.m. Students who have missed this deadline and would still like to apply to the workshop may submit materials to the instructor electronically by Friday September 3, at 5 p.m., in case there are any last-minute openin! gs. Please submit your materials electronically in a single attachment to lcohen01@wesleyan.edu. Please use either Microsoft word or rich-text-format for your attachment. You will be notified electronically if you have been admitted (or not) to the course. Students may not take this course and another creative writing workshop concurrently. |
