This course is an introduction to contemporary creative nonfiction writing. We will analyze works of memoir, travel literature, profiles, and other essays that exemplify a range of formal approaches to the genre. The course is also an introduction to workshop procedures: Students will work on their own nonfiction in exercises, experiments, and longer essays, and they will develop a critical vocabulary for analyzing each others' writing. |

Exercises in elements of nonfiction writing, one long essay, and two revisions. |
Additional Requirements and/or Comments:
Attendance at and participation in every class are required. May not be taken in the same semester as another writing course.Students are also required to attend 2-3 events per semester with visiting writers (these are scheduled on Wednesday afternoons and evenings; Q & A sessions at 4:15 and readings at 8:00 p.m.). Enrolled students must adjust their schedules accordingly.Students may not take this course and a creative writing workshop concurrently. |
