This course is an introduction to contemporary creative nonfiction writing. We will analyze works of memoir, travel literature, profiles, and other essays that exemplify a range of formal approaches to the genre. The course is also an introduction to workshop procedures: Students will work on their own nonfiction in exercises, experiments, and longer essays, and they will develop a critical vocabulary for analyzing each others' writing. |

Writers studied include: Hilton Als, Nicholson Baker, James Baldwin, Edwige Danticat, Joan Didion, Patricia Hampl, Maxine Hong Kingston, Jamaica Kincaid, Bernadette Mayer, John McPhee, Susan Orlean, and others.

Examinations and Assignments: Regular short exercises, a long essay, and a final portfolio. |
Additional Requirements and/or Comments: May not be taken in the same semester as another writing workshop. Students are also required to attend 2-3 readings (usually scheduled on Wednesday nights) during the semester. |
