The New City Reconsidered: Race, Poverty, and the Urban Future Since Katrina

From Chicago after the Great Fire of 1871 to Watts after the riots of 1965, moments of chaos or disaster have revealed cities' pre-existing racial, ethnic, and economic rifts while raising often controversial questions about the viability, design, and development of particular neighborhoods. This seminar takes the debate surrounding the rebuilding efforts along the Gulf Coast following Hurricane Katrina as a point of departure for proposing an urban future. We will look at issues of housing, education, labor, displacement, and economic development, and urban culture, drawing from a variety of disciplines and cases, with an emphasis on historical examples of urban rebuilding, renewal, and reconfiguration. Readings will include both recent scholarship, commentary, and policy proposals for New Orleans and historical accounts relevant to the questions posed by the recent disaster. |
