Problem Solving for the Putnam MATH 211 Fall 2014 Section: 01   This course will explore the problems and problem-solving techniques of the annual William Lowell Putnam mathematical competition. Particular emphasis will be placed on learning to write clear and complete solutions to problems. The competition is open to all undergraduate students. Credit: .25 Gen Ed Area Dept: None Course Format: Lecture / Discussion Grading Mode: Credit/Unsatisfactory Level: UGRD Prerequisites: None Fulfills a Requirement for: None Past Enrollment Probability: 90% or above SECTION 01 Major Readings: Wesleyan RJ Julia Bookstore Examinations and Assignments: Regular homework and final exam Additional Requirements and/or Comments: The class will meet on these dates: Sept. 1, 8, 15 and 29; Oct. 13; Nov. 3, and 17; Dec. 1. Attendance at six or more classes, completion of five or more homework assignments, AND attendance at the final exam are required for credit. The class will meet in SCIE 601. This course cannot be used as the 200-level math course needed for AP credit. The course is recommended for any student interested in taking the Putnam exam on the first Saturday in December, which in 2014 is Dec. 6th.
