This creative writing class will consider the supernatural, the impossible, and even the absurd in literature. How do supernatural events (or characters, or settings) play with and against conventions of 'realistic' fiction? How does the writer maintain (or trifle with) the reader's belief? To what ends can the supernatural be put? |

Works by Henry James, Gogol, Cortazar, Nabokov, Kafka, Borges, Bathelme, Kincaid, Carter, Singer, Lovecraft, Murakami, Pelevin, Evenson, and others.

Examinations and Assignments: 5 short stories of 3-5 pages each. One final project of 10 pages. |
Additional Requirements and/or Comments: Students should submit a writing sample of no more than 5 pages to the English Department office by 4:00, on Tuesday, September 4. Include a cover sheet with your name and email address. Interested students should attend the first class on Weds., September 5 to hear what the course will involve. A class list will be posted on the English Department bulletin boards at 294 Court Street on Monday, September 10. Admitted students must attend the second class; others can attend then also, to see if anyone doesn't want his/her place. |
