This course surveys the aspects of life that made the Cold War era a distinctive period of American history. We will examine the critical transformations in, and interconnections among, politics, culture, science, technology, the arts, and social life. What forms did anti-communism take in foreign policy and domestically and how did they affect such revolutionary transformations in American society as the Civil rights movement? How was American society, culture, and politics changed because of technical developments including nuclear arms, the computer, airplanes, survey research, the birth control pill, and new scientific conceptions of race, gender, sexuality, rationality, and modernity? How did these developments affect the meanings of citizenship, democracy, and even America? We will be examining these questions through both readings (original and secondary) and movies in order to understand fundamental changes in how Americans lived and understood one another, as well as how they interacted with the emergence of the national security state. |
