Analysis of some current issues and problems in the U.S. economy. Topics will be selected from the following: the housing market and the mortgage crisis; the market for body parts; the energy crisis; CAFE, and ethanol; family and corporate farming; wealthy Americans and others; corporate greed, fraud, stock options, and cooking-the-books; the decline of Detroit; money, inflation and the Fed; the federal deficit, debt, expenditure, and tax policy; (im)balance in international payments, NAFTA, CAFTA, and immigration; entitlements, Social Security, and Medicare. An integration of financial economics and market capitalism. Economic tools will be developed through these topics. Expect considerable attention to the economic issues raised by the presidential candidtes in the approach to the nominating conventions. Required: access to an introductory economics textbook.
