In this seminar we will discuss the past, present, and future of classical archaeology to consider the manifold social and ethical problems of our discipline. By using case studies of specific individuials (such as Schliemann), institutions (The Getty, The British Museum), and sites (the Akropolis), we will study such topics as colonialism and nationalism, the role of the museum, the economics of archaeological exploration, site preservation, war and vandalism, patronage and the antiquities market. |
