The First Gilded Age: Media and Modernity in the United States, 1865-1913
ARHA 276
Spring 2013 not offered
Crosslisting: AMST 249

Rapid advances in technology, a volatile economy, interventionist foreign policy, and the widening gap between rich and poor in the United States are among the trends that prompted turn-of-the-21st century pundits to announce the start of a "new" Gilded Age. In this course about the first Gilded Age, we shall study developments in American visual culture from Appomattox (1865) to the Armory Show (1913), looking in particular at how the growth of the mass media affected cultural practices and institutions.
