This course surveys key issues in the development of black feminism. Particular attention will be paid to contributions of feminists from black diaspora to this extensive and diverse body of knowledge. Our aim is to engage with works by black feminist and womanist theorists, activists and artists that consider how intersections of race, class, sexuality, religion, and other indices of identity operate in the daily lives of black women. To that end, we will take an interdisciplinary approach to unpack both the politics of and historical tensions in theory/practice, representation/self-making, and expression/performance. We will conclude with examination of #BlackLivesMatter, #SayHerName, and #BlackGirlMagic. |
