Culture is central to the study of mind and behavior. This course will provide students with an introduction to theory and research on culture in psychology. We will discuss what culture is, the methods that psychologists use to study culture, and how much of our behavior is universal or culture-specific. We will explore how culture influences how we think, feel, and behave. Studies and examples from cultures around the world (e.g., Africa, Latin America, North America) will be presented. |
Essential Capabilities:
Intercultural Literacy, Writing This course includes two brief writing assigments. These assignments aim to provide students with an opportunity to improve their writing skills. In addition, these assignments will encourage a critical reflection on cultural diversity in human behavior.
The course is focused on learning about how culture shapes human behavior. Students will acquire knowledge about what culture is. They will also learn that human behavior varies across cultures. This knowledge will allow them to think critically about their own culture. Moreover, a greater understanding on cultural differences in human behavior will also enhance students¿ intercultural sensitivity, i.e., their respect for and openness to other cultures. Thus, the course aims to enhance students¿ intercultural literacy.
