In this course we will explore why the human body behaves as it does both in its normal and diseased states. We will start out the course with a generalized overview of anatomy and physiology of the major organ systems of the body in order to provide a solid foundation for our later studies. Diseases (e.g., cancer, diabetes and obesity, cardiovascular disease, Alzheimer's, Crohn's) as well as current topics of interest (e.g., physical/mental stress, exercise benefits, caloric restriction, performance enhancement drugs, positive and negative effects of alcohol consumption, tobacco use and respiratory health) will then be explored in a case studies/discussion-based format in order to elucidate key principles as well as disease mechanisms. |
Essential Capabilities:
Interpretation, Logical Reasoning Interpretation: Clinical scientific data will be utilized in a case study format in order to integrate concepts from lecture with real-life scenarios. Logical Reasoning: Reasoning through scientific data/information in order to understand the integrated nature of human body systems within an organism.
