This course will focus on the 1960's in the United States. Topics to be considered will include: the civil rights movement, the anti-war movement, the Goldwater conservative movement, gay liberation, second-wave feminism, pop art, the New York School poets, Judson School dance, the new journalism, tendencies and developments within American Protestantism, Catholicism, and Judaism, student movements, the Black Power movement, the rise of Asian American and Latino/a cultural nationalisms, electoral politics, environmentalism, Phyllis Schlafly and the Eagle Forum, the Cuban missile crisis, the counter-culture. The approach will be multi-disciplinary, drawing on the insights and interpretive methods of history, literary criticism, American Studies, government, art history, and the history of science. No previous knowledge of these various disciplines or of the topics of the course is presupposed. Preference will be given to sophomores. |
Essential Capabilities:
Information Literacy, Interpretation Interpretation and Information Literacy: The approach of this course will be multi-disciplinary, drawing on the insights and interpretive methods of history, literary criticism, American Studies, government, art history, and the history of science.
