Race State examines the role of race in the conceptualization and execution of public policy in twentieth century American history. The course begins in the Great Depression with the construction of a racialized welfare state then moves to the question of an integrated military, school integration and the role of the courts, the creation of hyper-segregated metropolitan areas, the racialization of crime, voting rights, and busing, affirmative action, and the role of the state providing educational opportunity in a "post"- civil rights America. We will also consider important studies of race that shaped the policy discourse in the United States, including Myrdal's AMERICAN DILEMMA, the Kerner Commission Report, and Wililam Julius Wilson's writings on race and class. |
