This course will explore the literary career of Gwendolyn Brooks--poet, author, essayist--the first African American to win a Pulitzer Prize, awarded in 1950 for her collection of poetry, Annie Allen (1949). This course is designed to expose students to an interdisciplinary range of Brooks's works that will include collections of poetry, nonfiction essays, an autobiography and her novel, Maud Martha (1953). Through an examination of major themes in Brooks's works' including the heroism of an individual life, growing up in urban America within the context of race, class, sexuality, and disfranchisement, students will arrive at a greater understanding of the continuity and changes at work in the career of one of America's most accomplished and notable artists. Texts for this course will include visual screenings, audio recitations and selections of poetry. |
