Poetry and Song

Students will read poems by major poets in English (including Yeats, Shelley, Shakespeare, many living poets) and study settings of these poets by composers (Ives, Barber, Britten, etc.). Some work with poetry in German and French. Students will analyze poems and songs and do some creative writing/composing. |

Selected poems of Yates, Shelley, Shakespeare, et al. Selected songs of Charles Ives, Samuel Barber, Hugo Wolf, and others. Stern, Jack. POETRY AND MUSIC IN THE GERMAN LIED (excerpts).

Examinations and Assignments: Two quizzes; two analytical papers (short); one or two creative assignments; final exam. |
Additional Requirements and/or Comments: Students will keep a listening journal in which they identify and discuss all listening to art songs. Singing will be encouraged, but not required. Special emphasis on the songs of Charles Ives, Hugo Wolf, and Claude Debussy, and on DIE SCHIONE MÜLLERIN by Franz Schubert. |
