Advanced Research Seminar in Ethnic Minority Psychology

The course will focus on psychological processes that are especially relevant to ethnic minorities and to the intergroup relations between majority and minority groups, for example, prejudice and discrimination, integration, immigration, acculturation. Small teams of students will design a research project related to the topic of the seminar and will carry out these research projects during the semester. They will also learn how to properly analyze and interpret both qualitative and quantitative data. |

Designing, creating, and realizing
Students will design, build, and fully realize a research project. This will involve (1) the development of appropriate research questions and hypotheses based on theory and previous research, (2) designing the study, (3) choosing appropriate research methods, (4) collecting data, (5) analysis and interpretation of data, and (6) integration of all the aspects of the research in a research paper and a presentation.
Intercultural literacy
The seminar will help students gain more knowledge of and have direct contact with different ethnic minority groups (e.g., African-Americans, Muslim-Americans, Latino(a)s, Native Americans). This knowledge will allow students to think critically about their own culture. Moreover, this knowledge will enhance students' intercultural sensitivity, i.e., their respect for and openness to other cultural groups.

Examinations and Assignments:
Students will work on a research project in small groups throughout the semester. At the end of the semester, a written research report and a presentation is required. |
Additional Requirements and/or Comments:
Only one Wesleyan Univ. course can be taken as non-graded towards the major. Preference will be given to students who have taken Psyc 265 'Culture in Psychology: An Introduction to Theory and Research', and a Statistics course.
At the end of the semester the students will write up a research report and also give a presentation of their project and findings. I will meet with the students once a week to discuss readings and research projects. |
