Broadly defined, cognitive science is an interdisciplinary field that seeks to examine the nature of the human mind. The new cognitive science concentration in the Wesleyan Psychology Department was created by a committee of cognitive and developmental psychologists who study issues regarding numerical representation, categorization, decision making, reading, spatial representation, memory, social cognition, and how language can shape thought. This seminar is an opportunity for advanced students to come together and discuss their research with a community of researchers who are interested in questions regarding cognition and its development. It is meant for students who are currently involved in the cognitive science concentration and/or who are currently conducting research in an approved laboratory. |

Essential Capabilities:
Interpretation, Speaking
Speaking: Students will be responsible for presenting the research they are currently working on to the group. This will strengthen their speaking skills.
Interpretation: During the year-long course, students will be asked to synthesize current research from the areas of cognitive science. This will provide them with the opportunity to strengthen their skills in interpretation.

Primary-source scientific journal articles and book chapters will be assigned throughout the course, as needed, to supplement research presentations and will be made available in the context of the class (e.g., online access).

Examinations and Assignments:
This seminar will complement the research that students are doing in their approved research labs. As part of the Cognitive Science Concentration, students must present their research project to the group and must write a response paper to a cognitive science talk attended at the University. |
Additional Requirements and/or Comments:
Only one Wesleyan University course can be taken as non-graded towards the Psychology major. Students working in a laboratory of any faculty member associated with the Cognitive Science Concentration will be granted permission to take the course. Any other requests for permission should be made to the course instructor. This is an ampersand course; this means that students are required to take PSYC 345 and PSYC 346 in sequence for a one-year period. Although a "grade" (Cr/U) will be assigned at the end of the first semester, actual course credit will only be granted upon completion of PSYC 346. This course counts only as an elective towards the psychology major and is required for the Cognitive Science Concentration. |
