Crosslisting:
MB&B 196 |
This course provides an optional supplement to the lectures of the introductory course in physiology, development, evolution, and ecology (BIOL182). It is designed for students with a substantial background in biology who seek to engage with current research in an intensive seminar setting. Students of BIOL196 will attend the MWF lectures of BIOL182 and will take exams along with the BIOL182 students, but in addition, students will read and discuss recent journal articles that probe in greater depth some of the subjects covered in BIOL182. Weekly meetings will consist of a short lecture by the professor followed by group discussion of the readings. Students who enroll in BIOL196 should not be enrolled in BIOL182. |
Essential Capabilities:
Quantitative Reasoning In biological systems, there are typically no "perfect" designs, and organisms have evolved sometimes similar and sometimes unique solutions to common problems. Quantitative reasoning is an essential method for evaluating different physiological strategies. Also, mathematical models are essential for understanding evolutionary and ecological dynamics.

Major Readings: Wesleyan RJ Julia Bookstore
Readings will consist of data papers selected from recent scientific journals to highlight issues of current resonance. Examples may include: the impact of climate change on physiology, ecological interactions, and evolution; the link between environmental toxins and developmental disorders, and ecological and evolutionary risks of genetically engineered crops.

Examinations and Assignments: Students will attend lectures shared with BIOL182, and will take exams along with the BIOL182 students. Students will be expected to submit written discussion questions from the readings prior to each weekly discussion meeting of BIOL196. Grades will be based on the quality of these questions, on class participation, and on performance on exams shared with BIOL182. |
Additional Requirements and/or Comments: Students should have a strong interest in the biological sciences and a good background of coursework and/or research experience. |
