This course introduces students to Asian American literature and literary criticism by surveying how meanings of America have long depended on Asian America. We will explore how familiar contexts such as Asian exclusion and the model minority myth play out in the literature, but we will also turn to emergent trajectories, including representations of Asian Americans in the South, Vietnam War refugee aesthetics, and global cultures such as breakdancing. By examining a range of genres and the critical apparatuses that these works have generated, we will think about Asian America's broader role in the making of American culture. |
