This course will draw upon theories of state-building from the Middle East, early modern Europe, Latin America, and sub-Saharan Africa to understand the development of a variety of Middle Eastern states and their implications for social, political, and economic organization. The course encourages students to question the boundaries of "Middle Eastern exceptionalism" relative to other developing areas while also explaining sources of variation among the states of the region. |

Essential Capabilities:
Logical Reasoning, Writing
Logical Reasoning: This is a theory-intensive, advanced level seminar that will require students to grapple with key theories of state formation, both general and specific to the Middle East. Students must critically evaluate theoretical assumptions, causal arguments, conceptual definitions, methods, and empirical consistency.
Writing: This is a writing intensive course that will require students to conduct research, develop original arguments and criticism, and articulate complex ideas and historical information on paper. The course will include a number of short writing assignments and a long paper.
