Bodies of Science, Bodies of Knowledge

ANTH 312
Fall 2014 not offered
Crosslisting: SISP 313, FGSS 312
Course Cluster: Animal Studies, Disability Studies

This seminar explores scientific, medical, and anthropological constructions of the body with the aim of jostling reductive representations of bodies as entities that end at the skin and simply house minds. Readings will be interdisciplinary, drawing from critical medical and cultural anthropology, feminist science studies, philosophy, and other disciplines interested in the body. We will put our minds together to think about how imaginations of embodiment tie to political and knowledge-making projects both of domination and of resistance and what it means for a range of actors to live in "biological" bodies at the beginning of the third millennium.
