Bodies of Science, Bodies of Knowledge

ANTH 312
Fall 2015 not offered
Crosslisting: SISP 313, FGSS 312
Course Cluster: Animal Studies, Disability Studies, Health Studies

This seminar explores scientific, medical, and anthropological constructions of the body with the aim of jostling reductive representations of bodies as entities that end at the skin and simply house minds. We will think genealogically, meaning that we will look into the historical conditions of possibility for thinking of bodies as we do in our EuroAmerican culture. Readings will be interdisciplinary, drawing from critical medical and cultural anthropology, feminist science studies, philosophy, and other disciplines interested in the body and cross-cultural perspectives on the body. We will put our minds together to think about how imaginations of embodiment tie to political and knowledge-making projects both of domination and of resistance, and what it means for a range of actors to live in "biological" bodies at the beginning of the third millennium.
