Space and Place in Fiction

This seminar will consider the way writers make use of real and imagined geographies, and also the way they work with the space on the page, or, in the case of new media, off it. Some questions to be considered include, How have American writers conceived of the wilderness and where, if anywhere, do we situate the wilderness now? Has our relation to space itself changed over the last two hundred years? How is space connected to ideas of social organization? What's the value of getting lost? |

Essential Capabilities:
Interpretation, Writing
This course requires bi-weekly creative writing assignments, and a substantial creative final project. In addition, students will read and discuss their stories in class.
Students will also read works of fiction, nonfiction and criticism which relate to the theme of the class (i.e., the way writers represent space, and use space to create meaning). The class will discuss these readings critically.

Four short stories and a longer, creative final project. |

Please submit a 5-page sample of your fiction no later than Wednesday, November 18, 2009 at 12:00 noon to the English Department office, 204 Downey. Include a cover sheet with the course title and number, your name, year, major, email address, and a brief (1 paragraph) statement of your reasons for being interested in this class.
