This course investigates the identification, preparation, and application of drugs and medicines in the United States, emphasizing the period before the 20th century institutionalization of corporate research and development. Topics include bioprospecting for medicinal plants, the development of the international drug trade, and the formation of national pharmaceutical markets. Participants will explore the production of medical knowledge through local practice, public and private institutions, trade and commerce, and regulation. |
