|
This course introduces students to the history and aesthetics of documentary, exploring international nonfiction filmmaking from the origins of cinema to the end of the 20th century. Screenings, readings, presentations and discussions provide a range of material to help students understand how filmmakers, inspired by the concerns of their age, made use of new technology to help define and redefine documentary. The influential documentary modes and models developed by film theorist Bill Nichols will be introduced and applied. The complex issues of the form that include accountability, representation, access, and ethics are key aspects of the course. |
