This course will examine the origins, preferences, and organization of both non-violent and violent Islamist groups, with a particular focus on the Middle East and Central Asia. Students will be exposed to case-specific material, doctrines of political Islam in translation, and broader theories of social movements and state-society relations from the field of comparative politics. |
Essential Capabilities:
Intercultural Literacy, Writing Intercultural Literacy. Islamist social movements have generated substantial political, social, and cultural friction within and without the Middle East region. Through an in-depth study of history, intellectual thought, and theory, this course will encourage students to question individual and collective perceptions of political Islam.
Writing. This is a writing intensive course that will require students to conduct research, develop original arguments and criticism, and articulate complex ideas and historical information on paper. The course will include a number of short writing assignments and a long paper.
